The rumour of Mark Zuckerburg being in India can now be laid to rest. As of yesterday if you reside in India you will be given an option to select 1 of the 6 official languages to view Facebook in. So here it is, Facebook India.
Facebook being available in Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam gives the social network a potential 770 million users in India alone. That added to the 200 million currently active users will put the social giant just shy of the huge 1 billion mark.
However certain analysts are not sure how the localization of Facebook will go down. The biggest social network in the world is Orkut which is an Indian localised network and holds the greatest share of India “social browsers”. It is quite obvious that Facebook is the network to be on and most of the English speak Indians have made the move from Orkut to Facebook, this means that if Facebook can steal only few users fom Orkut we might find a new leader in the social networking “war”.
If Facebook were to become successful at this it would be the first start up to compete with Orkut with MySpace and Bebo already trying their hand but not getting very far.
