Liverpool vs Chelsea
There is a bit of discussion going on at CrunchGear about certain technological advancements being brought into the game of football (or soccer) and weather or not it should be there. One of them is some form of goal line technology that will allow the match officials to verify if the ball has crossed the line or not.
FIFA recently decided to go against using some sort of goal line technology in the upcoming soccer world cup to be held in South Africa. They have their reasons with one of them being that it may disrupt the flow of the game. This has left me to wonder if it would actually slow down the game and if fairness is not the objective of match referees. If I think of the other sports that have integrated technology in their game such as cricket and rugby I begin to believe that it won’t. A few seconds of pause with replays being displayed on big screens across the stadium should create even more suspense and allow the result to be fair for both sides.
Rugby has a TMO (Television Match Official) whose sole purpose is to watch the game and, when requested, check to see if a try has been made legally via replays. The arguments amongst fans that ensue after this are rather entertaining. What do you think? Do you think that sports should be left in it’s purist form and technology effecting the flow of the game should be left out? I would rather not watch a football game where South Africa scored but the ref did not allow it.
