First thoughts on the Apple iPad

I was lucky enough to get my hands on an iPad yesterday. It may not be a legit import by Apple nor have access to the App Store but I was still able to experience one of the hottest products out there at the moment.

The first thing I should mention is that it is quite a bit smaller than what I first thought.  In my head I had an A4 page sized device in my hand but it’s actually slightly bigger than an A5 page.  Then I also realised that it is a little bit heavier than what I was guessing as well. Not such a biggy.

Like the iPhone it is fully touch screen and the sensitivity is awesome although when we were trying to move through a movie we struggled to actually do it. Not sure if it is a bug or if our manly hands are just not set out to touch and drag a 5mm diameter circle across the screen.

People were not joking when they said it’s like holding an iPhone closer to your face. The whole experience is very iPhone like except for the fact that you cannot make network calls or put it in a normal pocket.

The keyboard on the iPad is also awesome and because of the size of the screen the letters are huge and pretty easy to access.

I’m pretty keen to see how well the iPad does when it is finally released in South African in June/July/August.  Heaven knows when we will get the 3G version. Note: I say that from a legit perspective. There are plenty of iPads on the market in South Africa but apparently Core Group (the guys who import the iPad) will not be supporting the “grey” imports.
