A Facebook (only) data center, it's a reality

Streamed by Seagyn on the 4th March 2010

I was reading an article the other day about how Facebook has grown and how it dominates the picture hosting arena. The figures are staggering with around 40 million photos being uploaded a day. That’s 2000 photos per second! The server power needed for that amount of data transfer is pretty huge and Facebook is already pretty well known for their customised server solutions which are hosted at various companies.

Facebook's Data Center

Facebook spends about R160 million a year on it’s numerous data centers with that cost increasing often (I would say at least on a monthly basis). With the possibility of reaching astronomical costs, Facebook made an announcement that it is going to be building it’s very own data center in Prineville in the US.

By the look of the artist impressions, the facility is going to be huge and most likely cost a pretty penny as well. Knowing Facebook, I can’t actually wait to see the finished “product”.
