Logitech Wireless Desktop MK710
Logitech just announced a new wireless desktop that will be hitting retail stores in April. The Logitech Wireless Desktop MK710 seems to have the four important factors of wireless desktops covered. We are not sure how well they have covered them but it does seem like they have made a very good effort.
The four important factors when it comes to wireless desktops are ease of connectivity, battery life, comfort and good looks with battery life and connectivity being the most important in my opinion. Looking at what Logitech have told me and having a quick look at the pictures, they have done a great job in most likely achieving all those goals.
According to Logitech, the batteries should last about 3 years before needing to be replaced and no this does not mean you still have to charge them. In fact the desktop only takes normal alkaline batteries so that is really not that bad, R100 over the next 3 years. In fact, Logitech are using 90% less power in their wireless devices than they were 9 years ago. This also means that they are helping to save about 41 million batteries used over 3 years.
The wireless desktop makes use of the Logitech Unifying Receiver that we spoke about last year. It also uses a much higher frequency than most other wireless setups which is 2.4 GHz. My only issue with running at that specific frequency is that it is now playing in the wireless networking arena which might cause a little bit of interference but hopefully Logitech have triple checked this. Also for the security mad people out there, the connection is encrypted.
Logitech spends a lot of time with their product ergonomics and not time was spared for this desktop neither. All the buttons on the mouse and keyboard are placed so minimal effort is required to reach them. The keyboard also has a built in LCD display to show you when Num Lock, Caps Lock or Scroll Lock are on as well as the battery level.
The desktop should be available in retail stores in April and will go for about R1 200.
